What is Puro.earth?

Puro.earth is a carbon removal marketplace and verification platform that facilitates the trading of CO₂ Reduction Certificates (CORCs). Unlike traditional carbon offsets – which typically involve avoided emissions or forestry – CORCs represent engineered carbon removal: carbon that has been actively taken out of the atmosphere and stored durably.

Puro.earth is majority-owned by Nasdaq, and CORCs are issued in the Puro Registry – they can then be retired by buyers or traded on voluntary carbon spot markets. They are purchased by companies seeking verified, auditable carbon removal to meet Scope 1, 2, and 3 net-zero commitments. The buyer gets a CORC. The carbon stays in the ground.

What is a CORC?

A CO₂ Reduction Certificate (CORC) represents one tonne of CO₂ permanently removed from the atmosphere and stored. In the case of Biochar, the carbon is sequestered in a form that is stable in soil for centuries – not decades. It doesn’t burn. It doesn’t reverse. It doesn’t depend on a standing forest.

For corporate sustainability and ESG buyers, CORCs provide the documented, auditable proof they need for board-level disclosure and Scope 3 supply chain reporting.

How does Biochar generate CORCs?

When timber waste is converted to Biochar through pyrolysis, the carbon that was stored in the timber is locked into a stable form rather than released into the atmosphere. Each tonne of Biochar produced locks away more than a tonne of CO₂ – because Biochar is roughly 80–90% stable carbon, a single tonne typically represents around two to three tonnes of measurable, verifiable CO₂ removed from the carbon cycle.

Once a producer achieves full Puro.earth verification, each tonne of Biochar produced generates multiple CORCs – with the exact number set by the verified methodology – which can then be traded on the voluntary carbon market.
